Press Release - Changing tides: Marine priorities for the sea around Alderney

27 June 2017

The Alderney Marine Forum will be screening the film "What is your connection to the sea around Alderney?" on Tuesday 11th July, 6pm at the Island Hall. Everyone with an interest is welcome to attend. Members of the Alderney Marine Forum and staff from the United Nations Environment World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) will be on hand to answer any questions that people may have.

The film has been produced as a result of the consultation undertaken earlier this year and provides a summary of those findings ahead of developing a marine management plan for Alderney. The plan will be used to support the sustainable use of the sea around Alderney for the benefit of the whole community. It includes measures to conserve and protect Alderney's marine environment and marine resources for the benefit of future generations.

We are particularly grateful to residents who have provided their views.

The initial catalyst for this marine management planning was recognition by the States that the Island's marine resources are some of the most valuable long-term economic assets for the island. As such there would be very considerable merit in establishing a management plan which was developed and supported by the community, and which sought to protect the island's very special marine environment while at the same time identifying any wise and sustainable economic opportunities now and in the future that our sea and coastline provide.
