Press Release - Fort Tourgis

For immediate release: 15th May 2018

Plans for a major hotel development at Fort Tourgis took a step closer today when the States of Alderney's Policy and Finance Committee gave its approval to revive the proposals which were first made in 2004. Economic recession had meant that the investment had stalled but recently the developers, Move Development, have indicated that they will have secured the necessary finance by July which would enable the scheme to proceed.

It is understood that the hotel operation will be undertaken by Exclusive Hotels and that the Dutch Government are willing to provide financial guarantees. The investment would begin as soon as the necessary agreements and permissions are in place and the hotel could be open in early 2020.

James Dent, Chairman of the Policy and Finance Committee, welcomed the renewed interest in Fort Tourgis. "This is very good news. It has the potential to make a huge difference to Alderney" he said. "The economic impact of year-round visitors will create and sustain many jobs and businesses on the island. And the impact on air transport will be enormous. We think that this could generate enough passenger movements on the Alderney-Southampton route to make it profitable and ensure that we retain this connection in the long term."

The States of Alderney will now draw up draft Heads of Agreement with Move Development and carry out the necessary due diligence. The States will also ensure that the potential impact on air transport is incorporated in the current work on establishing a Public Service Obligation.
