Press Release - Tidal Energy Group mandate agreed

For immediate release: 14th November 2018

The Policy and Finance Committee have approved the mandate for an Alderney Tidal Energy Group (ATEG) chaired by Mr Nigel Vooght. The Group's overall objective will be to get maximum value from the development of Alderney's tidal energy resource for the benefit of the island and community.

The Group will initially focus its efforts on information gathering, ensuring that lessons are learned from what is happening elsewhere in the world on tidal energy development and understanding the political and market issues in the Channel Islands, France and the UK. They will also assess the stage that developers have reached in tidal technology and make recommendations on the best approach for Alderney.
Chairman of the Policy and Finance Committee, Mr James Dent, said "This is going to be a carefully structured approach to re-setting our approach to tidal energy. We need to develop a route map for its development which takes account of today's market and political environments."

The Group's attention will also be turning to the regulatory needs for tidal energy and they are expected to make recommendations on the future of the Alderney Commission for Renewable Energy. The ATEG will report its recommendations to the Policy and Finance Committee and will not negotiate with third parties without the Committee's authorisation.
As well as Mr Vooght, the Group's members include Mr James Lancaster of Alderney Electricity Ltd, Mr Chris Brock and States Members Mr Dent and Mr Snowdon.
