Poultry owners told to be prepared for Bird Flu reaching Alderney

The States of Alderney is asking poultry owners to be prepared for the possibility that Avian Influenza could reach Alderney.

Poultry are susceptible to the disease which is spread through contact with infected birds or their excrement. To help protect flocks, the States Vet has advised that water and feed be covered to ensure wild birds cannot access them.

Furthermore, should there be an outbreak on Alderney, owners would be required to house their flocks inside or under cover. Poultry owners must prepare for this eventuality. Failure to take adequate precautions not only puts your flock at risk but also other people's flocks as well as Alderney's internationally significant seabird colonies.

Avian Influenza is a notifiable disease in Alderney which requires compulsory slaughter of infected and in-contact birds.
