President's Office

Mr William Tate was elected President of the States of Alderney on 21st June 2019.

William originally qualified as a solicitor in 1978 in Leeds, eventually establishing his own specialist legal practice. He was subsequently called to the Bar and practiced on the North Eastern Circuit. Over the years he has chaired or sat on numerous committees of professional bodies and charitable organisations, both in the UK and on Alderney.

William was appointed as Alderney's first Land Use Plan Inspector at the inception of the new Land Use Plan process in 1999, in order to provide a framework for developing policy in relation to the use of the island's assets. Willliam is married to Gabrielle, a Chartered Accountant, and has lived on the island since 1996.

The Vice President for 2019 is States member James Dent.

The President's Office is responsible for the following:-

  • Production and issue of the Billet D'Etat, Deliberations and Hansard Reports
  • Dealing with Members of the Public and other Government offices
  • Official Flag Flying (see Flag Flying Policy attachment)
  • Organising civic and social events including Vin d'Honneurs and visits by dignitaries
  • Honours and Awards (see procedure below)
  • Congratulations from The Queen on 100th Birthdays and Diamond Wedding Anniversaries (see below)

The President also holds the following positions:-

  • Trustee and Chairman of The Alderney Maritime Trust (AMT)
  • Trustee of the ME Cheape Charitable Trust
  • Trustee of St Anne's Trust
  • Trustee of the Mary Roylance Mignot Memorial Hospital Trust
  • Trustee of Interest on Investments Fund
  • Patron of the Alderney Cancer Relief Trust
  • Patron of the Royal Channel Island Yacht Club
  • Chairman of the Alderney branch of RNLI
  • Guardian of the Alderney Foundation


The procedure for nominations for UK National Honours:-

Nominations should be forwarded to the President's office in Alderney in the first instance. The President will forward the nomination with his support to the Lt Governor in Guernsey, who in turn will forward it to the Cabinet Office with his support. Nominations made in this way are more likely to proceed in a timely manner.


Congratulations from The Queen on 100th Birthdays and Diamond Wedding Anniversaries

Please advise the President's office with plenty of advance notice, of any friends or family members who are due to reach their 100th Birthday or Diamond Wedding Anniversary.  A birth certificiate or marriage certificate will be required to verify the dates.  The information is then passed to the Lt Governor's office in Guernsey who then forward the request to the Palace.
