I have the honour to inform you that a Meeting of the States will be held at 5:30pm on Wednesday 23rd July 2008 in the Island Hall. This will be preceded by the People"s Meeting, which will be held on Wednesday 16th July 2008 at 7:00pm in the Island Hall.

Item l By Election
The following letter has been received from Sir Norman Browse, President States of Alderney:- "I propose that the States arrange a suitable date for a by-election to fill the vacancy that exists following the resignation of Mr Richard Cox and the absence of any nominations for the by-election that was arranged fro 28th June 2008.
At the end of this year there will be a general election to fill the vacancies that will arise when the term of office of five Members ends and, for the same reason, a Presidential Election.
The revised Electoral Roll will be available on 15th October 2008.
To avoid confusion with the end of year elections it would seem sensible to hold a by-election before the main elections that will take place in late November or early December.
The coming into effect of the new roll on 15 October means either that poling day must be before that date or the entire by-election process (including nominations) be gone through thereafter - the process cannot span a period commencing before and ending after it. Unfortunately, if the by-election is held before 15 October then those who have only registered this year will not be able to participate in it, but it does not seem practicable to go through the entire process after the new roll comes into effect and before the ordinary election.
I suggest the States discuss holding a by-election on 11th October 2008 and attach a timetable for its consideration and approval.
That Nominations will be received during
the seven days ending at 4:00pm on 30th September 2008
That Polling day be 11th October 2008
That the Polling Room be the Members" Room, Island Hall.
The successful candidate will hold office until the remainder of Mr Cox"s term of office, which ends on 31st December 2010.
The application forms for inclusion in the new electoral roll will be sent to all householders. Everyone who wishes to vote in the Ordinary Election at the end of the year must complete an application form even if they are on the current roll.
The States is asked to approve of the arrangements for the By-Election to be held on the 11th October 2008.
