2005 - The Homecoming

Alderney is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the homecoming - after mass evacuation of the island in 1940, with a special £2 stamp. The miniature sheet featuring a £2 stamp designed by Peter Furness, depicts the sun setting over the island, just as it would have done all those years ago on 15 December 1945 and features the wording: ``The homecoming of Alderney` evacuees began on 15 December 1945 - almost seven long months after the Liberation of the other Channel Islands on 9th May. The sunset symbolises closure, putting behind past emotions and hope for a new day tomorrow``.
