2005 - Trafalgar Stamp series

Date of Issue: 9 May 2005.

As part of the SeaAlderney 2005 marketing theme, the island has issued a new set of 6 stamps commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and Admiral Horatio Nelson` famous victory over the Franco-Spanish fleet on 21 October 1805. Designed by Shaun Shackleton, the 26p shows Nelson in full-dress uniform. The 32p value features HMS Victory proudly leading the weather column into battle, and the 36p stamp depicts a marine and his trusty musket. The 40p stamp shows the fatally wounded Admiral Nelson in the cockpit being tended by Captain Hardy. The 45p value illustrates HMS Victory in perhaps her most defining moment - breaking the Franco-Spanish line and fighting almost "scuppers-on" with the French ship "Redoutable". The 65p stamp is a portrait of Admiral James Lord de Saumarez - the Channel Islands greatest naval hero -and, though he was not at Trafalgar, de Saumarez went on to command HMS Victory after the Battle of the Nile.
